Here it is, the long awaited and highly anticipated hair blog. I get so many questions about my hair I decided to document the process. Before you read my step by step, there are a few things you should understand:
1) I have no professional training and no idea what I'm doing, but this seems to work.
2) I naturally have thick wavy hair which is pretty much willing to do what I ask it to do.
3) I only wash my hair once a week. (It looks best on days 3-5 of the 7 day cycle, so I wash it on Tuesday, that way it looks really good for the weekend and my social nights out)
4) You need to start with a good haircut. I go to a place called Parlor, on Avenue B in NYC. (Ask for Gina Cole, tell her I sent you.) When my hair is this length, it is layered. I bring a pic of a young Elizabeth Taylor. As it approaches my shoulders, Gina gradually makes it one length and I don't bring a pic.
5) The below steps are exactly the same for my hair its current length, as well asthe very long hair I had earlier this year.
You will need:
Wet hair supplies: (comb and clips)

Hair Drying Supplies: (hair dryer and round brush with barrel appropriate for your hair length)

Hot Rollers: (These are Conair Ion Shine and my favorites I've ever used)

Curling Product: (Nu Nile Pomade and Got 2b Glued)

Step 1: Wash your hair (I'll assume you know how to do this) This is how my hair looks out of the shower:

Step 2: Allow it to air dry a little bit (about 15 minutes) and create your part:

Step 3: Add product: (Aveda Brilliant)

Step 4: Comb product through:

Step 5: Allow to air dry more than half way, maybe 30 minutes or more depending how fast your hair dries. Mine looks like this now: (not pretty)

Step 6: Use clips to section hair, leave bottom layer loose:

Step 7: Use round brush and hair dryer to blow dry bottom layer. Then my hair looks like this:

Step 8: Continue drying hair, section by section (removing 1 clip at a time). This part takes me at least 30 minutes and when I'm done it looks like this: (It's a good idea to turn on the hot rollers now, since you'll need them soon)

Step 9: Time to curl! I use all 20 hot rollers. Don't curl more than 2 inches of hair per roller. I use a finger tip of product for each curl- I use either nu nile pomade or got 2 be glued or both PER curl. It takes at least 15 minutes for this step. Then it looks like this:

Step 10: While the rollers are still in my hair and cooling down, I put on my makeup. However, I wanted to spare you the agony of seeing me without makeup in this blog, so I put it on when my hair was wet. It takes about 20 to 30 minutes for them to cool completely. When the rollers come out, my hair looks like this:

Step 11: If your hair still feels warm, you took out the rollers too soon. Just wait until your hair is cool before touching it, or you may lose your curls. Once the hair is cool, the curls should be arranged however you want. This step is more art than science. First I use a bobby pin to pin down my front curl (the one with the blonde streak). Then I insert a flower or hair comb on the left side. Then I usea hairpick and my fingers to rearrange the rest of the curls into place. This takes about 5 minutes. I usually spray a little Aqua Net on it at this point because it's done! And you all know what it looks like now-

I typically do the hot roller step 2 or 3 times on Day 1 (the day I wash it). The whole Day 1 routine is approximately 3 hours.
Then, I just curl it daily, applying more product every day, and doing the curl arranging/hair spray step. That takes about 30 minutes a day. After 7 days of this abuse, my head is so filthy I actually look forward to washing it.
I think that about covers it, but I'll take questions if there are any. Good luck!

I must be one lazy bitch, because if my hair takes more than 10 mintues a day, I'm just apt to shave it. You, m'dear, are a goddess, and I am in awe...
i was going to say the same thing - if it takes me more than 5 minutes to do my hair - then it's too long... god bless you for having such patience - it really does look fab when you're done... :o)
Fabulous.
I'm the kind of person you dislike - wash hair, scrape up to a ponytail and let them air-dry. Then they're really frizzy/wavy/allovertheplace and drive me mad but I don't want to use straighteners nor have the patience for blow-drying and proper styling. And I have to wash them nearly every day thanks to my job... At least there's people like you for people like me to admire.
Ps. I spy Hello Kitty :D
I have never had talent for hair and makeup, though I do try. I always look like I did both in the dark. ^_^
i was thinking about how much work that takes...then realized 3 hours for once a week is not bad. and it does look purty darn cool.
my hair is too fine for that kind of treatment but we'll just admire yours. :D
You're a patient patient woman, no wonder your hair always looks amazing!
I have tried using rollers in past and they just get stuck in my hair..lol
Oh my goodness, you have the best hair.
Thank you, all.
For the record I am not patient, it's more a matter of not feeling "right" unless I do certain things. I don't even mind the time it takes- except the washing/drying. I HATE that step. I just did it tonight and am so glad it's over. The daily curling is fun.
Your hair is so amazing! I just found your blog because googleReader suggested it - Can you let me know what shampoo/conditioner you use? I find my hair is soooo gross after 4 days that I need to wash it, although after going to all the work of setting it I hate to do so.
Fabgirl- You asked me a question last November I am sorry I never answered it: I used to use any shampoo on sale (suave, generic pantene, etc) I just recently picked up a super expensive shampoo called Pureology. I've only used it once so far. But it's supposed to be better for your hair because there are no sulfites.
Not sure if you are still reading this, but if you are, I've got a question.
You mentioned that you wash your hair once per week, and I know you are really into working out. How does this work for you? My hair is such a salty, sweaty mess after one workout, I can't imagine not washing it. It gets super greasy on the second day, even if I don't work out. Is it one of those things you have to "train" your hair to do?
Hey there- Yes, I still wash it once a week. And I sweat a LOT every day. Whether I work out or not. It's pretty disgusting actually. But I do not have greasy hair, in fact, my hair is so dry that I add grease (pomade) to it just to make it look somewhat normal. But my hair is so thick and takes so long to wash and dry that there literally is not enough time in the day for me to wash it more frequently. It's true though, dirty hair is much more 'trainable'.
Wow. I love the hair. But I agree with the other commentors... I thought my hair style had gotten a little too complex when I introduced a straighter into my morning routine! That is serious dedication...
You only do the rollers and stuff once a week? How do you keep your hair from getting totally destroyed when you lay on it and sleep?
Shayna, I curl it EVERY DAY. I only wash it once a week :)
Hey there.
I know this is old, but my question is how you deal with your hair around sex. Before/during/after? I'm wondering how you manage because I am totally a tactile person and anytime time I expect some, I'm very careful about how my hair is/feels.
Gracias, senorita.
Another question/statement.
Your hair looks really pretty like it is in for Step 5 (well, a little more styled obviously). Do you ever wear it like that? Because it a really cute, more mellow style.
Hi P: OMG I would never wear it with its natural wave like in step 5!!!! For me, "casual" is a hot roller in the bangs for that curl I have every day and the rest in a pony tail. But I hate not having it done. I don't feel "right" all day.
and P, the sex question - hilarious! No one ever asked me that! Basically, if I am having sex, I am not likely going back out that night so I don't care how messed up my hair gets. My lover can touch it (but not pull it, I'm not into hair pulling) or mess it up, that's fine. Of course if I *am* going out after the... event, he is not allowed to touch it :)
I am going to give this a try tonight! Your style has inspired me today.
Now how about a post about how you do your make up?
